LOGOS East Trip for Westminster Youth

Doug Halls and Sandy Curran will lead the Westminster youth trip to the LOGOS East July 23-29 gathering at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA. The week-long Summer Youth Conferences provide youth and youth leaders with an opportunity to participate in inspirational worship and Bible study, engage in sports and recreational activities, build and enrich Christian relationships…and to just have fun! The group will leave Madison on July 22 and return July 30, and we ask you to keep them in your prayers as they travel for a wonderful experience at the conference. Contact Marian Bauer for more information.

Christian Education and Other Activities for Westminster Youth

Please be a part of the TEAM to help with teaching in the new church school year which begins September 10.  We plan to have three teachers in the 3 to 4 year-old class, which means two would be on and the third off each week.   About three more people are needed to help with Workshop Rotation (rotations are drama; crafts; games/computers) and ‘shepherds’ for the K-thru-Grade 4 group. Contact Marian Bauer at 238-3121 or  email her at marianbauer@westminstermadison.org  .

The new church year begins September 10, 2006, which will include activities for these groups:  K-Grade 4; Grades 5-7 and Grades 8-12.  There will be a variety of age-appropriate activities such as swimming, bowling, progressive dinners, service activities, movie nights, and more! We need people to help with activities plus planning, chaperoning, driving, etc. Watch the newsletter for more details. Contact Marian Bauer if you have any questions.

Put your interest in the youth of Westminster into action?  The Christian Education Committee seeks people to be  on the following sub-committees: Nursery, Church School (elementary aged children) or Youth (grades 5-12).  Contact Bill Bridson, Chair of the CE Committee or Marian Bauer if you have any questions.

Youth (grades 5-12) and parents meeting with Alex Thornburg

Please come to Marian Bauer’s home, 5015 Sheboygan Avenue, #104, on August 26, 2006 at 2 PM to meet with our new pastor Alex Thornburg and his son, Noah.   We will meet informally to get to know one another and have a time of sharing what each hopes for the youth in 2006-2007 and beyond!  Please let Justine Hollander, jshollander@wisc.edu know that you are coming. Bring a small treat which begins with the first letter of your first or last name.  For example, Marian might bring M & M’s!  (If the weather is nice, we’ll later head on over to close by Rennebohm Park for an ultimate Frisbee match!)

Child Protection Policy

Westminster Presbyterian Church is committed to the sanctity of all its children and youth.  A well-implemented child protection policy not only protects children, but also adults who minister to children.

The Personnel Committee and the Session of Westminster Presbyterian Church are preparing a Child Protection Policy to help keep our children and youth as safe as possible.  Copies will be available to the congregation when it is approved.

Nominations for the Board of Deacons Class of 2009

The Church Nominating Committee of Westminster is seeking nominations to fill positions in the Board of Deacons Class of 2009. The Board of Deacons is an important part of our church's mission whose activities include; attendance at meetings once a month, service on a committee, visiting homebound members, greeting after worship, overseeing a parish, serving communion, and attendance at one officer retreat held at the start of the year and a training session in late November or early December. If you have a nominee of a WPC member please contact Ed Cothroll, Chair of the Nominating Committee.

Attention Committee Chairs

Please contact the office to update your meeting schedule for August and September, including all information about your participation in Rally Day, September 10.

Allied Drive Food Pantry

Dear Westminster friends,

Thank you all so much for the food drive. It was a really large one for the summer months, and all the food we need most. We feel so grateful for all the help in the neighborhood.

We wish you all a fun summer filled with many blessings.

Mike & Anne Bodden, and Connie Weisse (July 1, 2006)

Mission Committee Report

I would like to add my thanks to Westminster to say how proud I was of the food you brought, along with the $545 you contributed. Way to go!!  Allied Drive will be having another drive for school supplies to help fill backpacks. There are around 700 children in the Allied area. A box for your supplies donations will be in the narthex after August 1.

Heads up! There is a two-week period when the Boys and Girls Club closes their summer programming and does not provide lunch. The churches which comprise Allied Partners each assign themselves one day to make a meal. Last year, we (WPC) made Sloppy Joes. I don't yet have an exact date. It will be some time in the last two weeks of August. When the date is set, information will be shared.  Again, many thanks for your continuing generosity.

Alice Appen, Representative to Allied Partners from the Mission Committee

Summer Backyard Bible Study

Here's an excellent opportunity to meet new people and share ideas in a friendly, informal and stimulating social setting. From 7-8:30 PM on Tuesday evenings (7/11, 7/18, 7/25, 8/1, 8/8, and 8/15) this summer there will be gatherings at various homes, in backyards or on porches. Facilitating these studies will be Kathleen Cook Owens, McCormick seminary student. Kathleen has offered to lead a study on Faith Conversations - A Look At Talking About Faith With Our Neighbors From Other Christian Traditions. In past years we have studied Isaiah, First Corinthians, and more recently hosted two ecology groups.

We expect to keep our study & socializing to 1½ hours or less. You don’t have to forgo vacation trips or other events – just come when you can. Bring a folding chair in case it’s needed. Each host is asked to provide simple refreshments such as lemonade or iced tea and cookies. If you have limited space at your home to accommodate 12 to 15 people, you can co-host with someone else and provide the refreshments. For more information, contact Cynthia Bush or Ruth Hein (Adult Education Committee).

Summer Study Group  "Rethinking War, Rethinking Peace, Making Peace"

Coming July and August for five Sundays at 8:30 am, an adult study group will be formed to discuss the book, "Rethinking War, Rethinking Peace, Making Peace". This material was developed in collaboration with the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. Bobbi Hargleroad, editor of Church & Society, strongly recommends this reading because "it has many thoughtful pieces to keep a group chewing for some time!"  Ed Daub will convene this study group. He plans to place the book order soon. The cost is $2.50 each if we order ten or more copies. Please contact Ed if you are interested in joining the group and getting a copy of the book.
