Each October Westminster participates in the Madison CROP Hunger Walk, for which the walkers, in particular our children and youths, solicit contributions from the congregation. There are one and three mile loops around the UW-Madison and University Heights neighborhoods. The need is great, the camaraderie is infectious.
HOUSING INITIATIVES | Westminster provides financial support for Housing Initiatives, the only organization in Madison that focuses exclusively on ending homelessness for our neighbors who suffer from severe mental illness, many of them veterans with PTSD. Their model is highly successful, with 95% of Housing Initiatives clients never returning to homelessness. A new project, A Place to Call Home, is raising funds to purchase and renovate apartment homes to house 50 veterans and other homeless.
Open Doors for Refugees (ODFR) is a non-faith-based, all-volunteer group formed to help refugees make a home in Madison by locating housing, finding employment and providing a caring community of support. ODFR also collects furniture and household items to setup apartments for those scheduled to arrive. When families did do arrive, their kitchen is stocked with groceries and a culturally appropriate meal awaits them. Members of the Westminster congregation have donated furniture and household items for apartments and have employed refugees for work around their homes. |
